Given the high prevalence of visual dysfunction in the pediatric population OT serves, therapists need a greater understanding of the complexity and importance of vision and how visual dysfunction can interfere with daily living skills, education as well as participation in therapies. All too often visual motor and perceptual needs and deficits are not fully addressed when working with the pediatric population as an OT. The occupational (OT) plays a key role in identifying the need for further evaluation and intervention with regard to visual deficits affecting function in a child’s daily activities including school and play activities. OTs can facilitate the identification of visual deficits and provide oculomotor screening as well as therapeutic intervention and education regarding visual deficits, activities, treatment and compensatory strategies. Additionally, an important role for the OT is referral and collaboration with the appropriate eye care professional. By gaining an understanding of visual motor and perceptual abilities, deficits, symptoms and pertinent diagnoses the OT understands how these deficits affect learning, mobility and function in daily occupations. The OT can educate their clients, family members , teachers, school personnel and other members of a treatment team about treatment strategies to address these visual needs. The therapist’s goals are to facilitate improvement with a child’s ability to organize visual information; compensate for visual limitations; and increase ability to utilize functional vision for performance in daily activities.
This course utilizes current research, case studies, hands-on labs, and discussion to identify the impact of visual motor and perceptual deficits on the child’s occupational performance. The course will cover how the occupational, physical therapist and speech therapists are able to assess visual skills and identify deficits that affect functional performance. The connection between reflex integration and visual development also plays a key role in functional vision and will be addressed in this course. How to collaborate with and refer to appropriate eye care professionals throughout the rehabilitation process will be discussed.

Describe vision terms associated with functional vision and visual dysfunction
Describe signs and symptoms of visual deficits, pertinent diagnoses, and how visual deficits affect performance in occupational performance including learning and school performance and participation.
Discuss the relationship between vision development and retained primitive reflexes
Discuss clinical observations and appropriate visual assessment methods with children
Incorporate knowledge of visual deficits into occupational and physical therapy assessment and treatment planning
Identify methods for educating and collaborating with clients, family members, physicians, teachers , school personnel and colleagues in how vision affects function in daily activities
Describe the collaboration and referral process with appropriate eye care professionals

Course Format and Methods of Instruction
This presentation will utilized current research, case studies, hands-on labs and discussion to identify the impact of visual perceptual deficits on the clients occupational performance; how the occupational therapist is able to assess visual skills and identify deficits that affect functional ability; and how to collaborate with and refer to appropriate eye care professionals in the community throughout the rehabilitation process.
